At Spiruvive, we use only the purest water, inoculum and nutrients for growing our Spirulina. In our closed micro-climate system, we are able to control the air, CO2, water, and nutrients to prevent any environmental and biological contaminants such as heavy metals, mycrocystins, and toxins that often plague the blue-green algae industry.
A compilation of research from various science journals describing the health benefits of Spirulina.
Arthritis and joint pain are caused by swelling that can severely impact people’s physical abilities. Generic drugs are mostly used for inflammation, however, we suggest that a natural food is a better route because we believe food is medicine. With Spirulina, patients do not have to suffer the risk of stomach pains and possible allergic reactions. In one study, 26 elderly women consumed Spirulina for 8 weeks significantly decreasing serum IL-6 levels and production demonstrating the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Spirulina.
Spirulina’s energy powers are fueled by the essential fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This Omega-6 fatty acid, found in Spirulina as well as some plant-based oils, is easily absorbed into the body and helps in releasing energy. It is also known to improve brain function, support bone health, stimulate skin and hair growth, and regulate metabolism. A randomized double blind study showed that after 8 weeks, Spirulina positively affected men with fatigue. Its energy-boosting effects have also helped people suffering from fibromyalgia. Dependence on coffee or other caffeinated drinks can be replaced by Spirulina consumption.
Heavy Metals and Toxins
Everyday, humans are exposed to various contaminants present in our soil, air, and water. These harmful contaminants may include heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. If these contaminants are absorbed in the body they pose an increased risk of serious illness like cancer. Phycocyanin is a major component in Spirulina and has been studied for its effect in defending and boosting liver function. A research paper conducted by the Journal of Biological Sciences found that SP (Spirulina Platensis) is a protective phyto antioxidant that helps reduce liver toxicity. In another study, Spirulina relieved the pathological damage induced by heavy metals and toxins. Spirulina has a high concentration of chlorophyll (the green pigment found in Spirulina), which also aids with detox. A recent study showed that chlorophyll reduced a known carcinogen (aflatoxin) by 95% within 24 hours. What’s more, it was discovered that chlorophyll can limit
Many people especially youth do not realize the implications and risk of anemia, a blood disease that is developed due to the lack of healthy red blood cells caused most often by a deficiency in iron, and essential vitamins. It is the most common blood disease in Canada and the United States; according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, 3 million Americans are affected by it. Common symptoms from the disease can range from severe fatigue, pale skin, to shortness of breath . In recent years, there has been an increase in clinical studies that determined Spirulina’s capability in treating patients with anemia. One study conducted by the Cellular Molecular Immunology Journal sampled 40 volunteers comprised of both sexes consuming Spirulina over a 12- week period. People diagnosed with anemia showed a significant improvement in blood count and higher enzyme activity .
In addition to treating anemia, the rich abundance of iron found in Spirulina counteracts iron deficient anemia . Although, Spirulina has strong remedial benefits, we recommend being proactive and taking SpiruVive to prevent this disease in the first place.
The University of Maryland published an article highlighting the importance of buying blue-green algae from a trusted source . Just as Spirulina absorbs toxins from your body and flushes them out, it can also absorb toxins from the environment in which it is grown. Traditionally, blue green algae are grown in large outdoor lakes and ponds where mycrocystin toxins may be present. As a health conscious consumer, you should be cautious and attentive to purchasing only from trusted growers.
SpriuVive is grown in our unique closed, controlled micro-climate system that guarantees the purity and quality of our Spirulina. We have eliminated the need to irradiate or dry it under high heat to kill the mycroscystins – a process that deteriorates the potency of Spirulina.
Diabetics are prone to cardiovascular problems such as coronary artery disease . However, managing the two diseases is hard to do. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes go hand in hand; doctors attempting to prevent both from happening often encounter difficulty. A peer reviewed article states: “The cardiovascular benefits of Spirulina are primarily resulted from its hypolipidemic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.” In addition, there are four human studies that show the positive effects of Spirulina on cardiovascular problems especially atherosclerotic vascular disease.
Conducted in Korea, a study of Type 2 diabetes patients were given 12 weeks worth of Spirulina , and later assigned to take it with no other supplementation. The test showed that the blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides significantly decreased, assisting in the management of diabetes . The conclusive data suggests that Spirulina has the potential and capacity of lowering the risk of heart disease. Moreover, another study showed that a dose of 2 grams of Spirulina for 2 months resulted in a significant decrease in cholesterol, triglycerides and free fatty acid levels. Cardiovascular diseases are quite difficult to manage- however, Spirulina may be a natural source of preventive and maintenance supplement that patients may choose to opt for.
